March 11, 2010 SeaWorld’s damage control team is in overdrive following the tragic death of a trainer who was killed by one of the theme park’s captive orcas. But if SeaWorld held press conferences every time an animal died at their facilities, people would be staying away in droves. SeaWorld, which owns most of the captive orcas and bottlenose dolphins in the United States, has one of the worst histories of animal care.Marine mammals are literally dying to entertain you. Twenty-one orcas died in U.S. SeaWorld facilities between 1986 and 2008—an average of nearly one a year for 22 years. » Full Story

March 11, 2010 A temporary excise tax increase... am I dreaming? I’ve looked everywhere in the news and can’t find a word about it. If it happens, this is closing the barn door after this cow is long-gone. This Hawai‘i Department of Education state employee has canceled her phone, landline and television. I’ve sold everything, canceled my retirement fund and chose cheaper medical coverage. I never go to restaurants or movies. I shop at the Animal Shelter Thrift Store—so my little speck of money is going to the dogs. » Full Story

March 11, 2010 The Maui News - Police are continuing to investigate the disappearance of a 43-year-old woman whose van was found Feb. 22 near the Pauwela lighthouse near Ha‘ikū. While an official search for Laura Vogel was suspended last week, friends and family members have continued to search for her. On Wednesday, March 3, a candlelight vigil for her was held near Pauwela lighthouse. Another candlelight vigil was held the following night in Rio Rancho, N.M., where Vogel had taught high school science. » Full Story

March 11, 2010 Pacific Business News - The United Public Workers (UPW) labor union has reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with the four county governments in Hawai‘i. On Monday, Feb. 22, the Hawai‘i Council of Mayors announced that UPW’s contract with Honolulu, Maui, Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i Island—will run through June 30, 2011. The governor must approve the deal before members can vote to ratify it. Specifics regarding the new contract, which covers approximately 10,000 city and state government workers in UPW’s Bargaining Unit 1, were not revealed. » Full Story
