March 4, 2010 We need to be very careful when we try to improve on nature. Things can be labeled invasive or endemic, but all of these living things are interconnected and play an important role in our environment.Take for example, the “invasive” ironwood trees that were growing on Hawea, Makaluapuna Point and surrounding coastal areas. These tree roots were home to the protected ‘ua‘u kani, but were cut down because a corporation labeled them as invasive. Cutting down the trees resulted in unobstructed ocean views, an added benefit to the landowners. » Full Story

March 4, 2010 Last week, four Hawai‘i state senators met behind closed doors to support powerful agricultural interests by continuing to allow the sale of a product so cruel that its production has been banned in 15 countries and the State of California, which also banned its sale.Foie gras, or fattened liver, is made by force-feeding ducks to the point of organ rupture and death so their livers can be up to 12 times their normal size and almost entirely fat.SB2170 would have banned the sale of this cruel product in Hawai‘i, and it passed the first Senate committee unanimously. » Full Story

March 4, 2010 The Maui News - Police suspended a search of the Pauwela area for a missing 43-year-old woman on Friday, Feb. 26, after tracking dogs turned up no trace of her during a fourth day of searching. Police said there was no indication of anything suspicious in the disappearance of Laura Vogel. Her van was found near Pauwela lighthouse Monday, Feb. 22, after she had planned to camp Sunday night in an area known as birthing pools near cliffs below the Ha‘ikū Community Center. » Full Story
