Casanova in Makawao will be host to another Maui Slam on Thursday, July 29, beginning at 9:30 p.m. at Casanova Italian Restaurant and Deli in Makawao.

With this literary equivalent to a mosh pit, Shakespeare may roll over in his sonnet-strewn grave, but for Mauians living in the 21st century, Maui Slam Poetry’s Body Slams are cutting edge events which combine literary, performing and visual arts.

During Maui Slam Poetry’s Body Slams, visual art is improvised and created by way of body painting, in response to the performance poetry, giving the participants and audience alike a wide exposure to the arts as well as an immediate and transformative experience.

Last summer’s Body Slam premiered Rachel DeBoer and her living poetry scroll painted on a lovely model.

This summer, Maui Slam steps into the future, when Rachel DeBoer and her Next Level Theater Productions body painting crew paint live female models as “black light” robots—in 3-D!

On this auspicious night, a black light area will be set up in the audience, where Rachel and her crew will body-paint using a ChromaDepth technique. ChromaDepth 3-D glasses will be passed out to the audience in order to enhance the illusion of depth on the body.

Turntable sorcery by DJ Boomshot and improv visuals by Benjamen Christ add to the artistic alchemy of the evening. The night culminates in a dance performance by the body-painted “robots.”

Maui Slam Poetry’s 2nd Annual Body Slam is a “No Rules” poetry slam event. Team pieces, musical accompaniment, props, etc., are encouraged.

The $100 cash prize is divided between the top three ranking poets at “No Rules” slams. Maui Slam Poetry will be running “No Rules” slams through August.

The mission of Maui Slam Poetry is to promote the performance and creation of poetry while cultivating literary activities and spoken word events in order to build audience participation, stimulate creativity, awaken minds, foster education, inspire mentoring, encourage artistic statement and engage communities worldwide in the revelry of the literary, performing and visual arts.

This slam is a 21-and-over event. Attendees pay a $5 cover at the door.
