Boeing, the world’s leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined, sponsored a local teacher recently for a “weeklong space mission.” Moloka‘i schoolteacher, David Gonzales, represented Hawai‘i this year at the 2010 Boeing Educators to Space Camp program held from July 12 to 17 in Huntsville, Ala. The fifth-grade teacher at Kaunakakai School joined more than 100 teachers from 13 countries as part of a training adventure designed to help teachers motivate students in science, technology, engineering and math. According to Boeing—which supports the Maui Space Surveillance Site and the Maui High Performance Computing Center, both owned by the Air Force Research Laboratory—2010’s group of teachers was the largest and most diverse Boeing-sponsored group to date. Since 1992, more than 700 teachers have participated in Boeing’s annual program, which is estimated to have reached more than 30,000 students worldwide. Learn more at boeing.com.
