The Maui News - With more than two-dozen Honda sedans reported stolen on Maui in the past two weeks, police are warning owners to lock their vehicles and take other security measures. Nearly all of the stolen Hondas have been 1990s models. The cars, including two- and four-door Accords and Civics, have been stolen from residences and parking lots in Central Maui, Upcountry, Kīhei and Lahaina, according to vehicle theft reports disseminated by police. “We are definitely aware of the problem out there,” said Lt. Tim Gapero of the Criminal Investigation Division. “We are addressing the matter with whatever resources we have [and] we are investigating cases that have been reported to us.” Since July 11, 27 Honda sedans have been reported stolen, according to police reports. Of those, 17 were reported to have been recovered as of last week. Gapero said some of the cars have been stripped of parts and stereos when they’ve been located. Other cars have been recovered intact. While some of the cars have been unlocked or had the keys inside when they were stolen, others were locked and hot-wired by the thief, Gapero said. “It doesn’t really matter, they will find their way in,” he said. “Most often, the owner has the keys.”
