Teachers union appeal rebuffed

November 24, 2011
The Maui Weekly

The Associated Press - A state judge ruled that the Hawai'i Labor Relations Board (HLRB) can't be compelled to quickly rule on a teachers union request for immediate relief from terms of a state-imposed contract.

Circuit Court Judge Rhonda Nishimura said last week that the request effectively asked her to impose a deadline. The Hawai'i State Teachers Association (HSTA) is objecting to the state's decision to cut teacher salaries by 5 percent and require teachers to pay half of their health insurance premiums. The HSTA filed a prohibited practices complaint, saying the state violated members' rights by implementing its "last, best and final" contract offer.
