Give It the ‘Old College Try’

It's that time of year again--and I'm not just talking about the holiday season. I am now accepting applications for the 2012 Josh Jerman Maui Nui Scholarship. Eight years ago, I started this scholarship program in order to encourage college-bound students to use their education to benefit Maui County. Since then, I've awarded $23,000 in scholarship funds to 23 students from high schools on Maui, Moloka'i and Lana'i.

I am proud to announce the three recipients of the 2010-11 Josh Jerman Maui Nui Scholarship: Kelly Luis of Kamehameha Schools Maui, Chelsea Sakamoto of Moloka'i High School and Stephen Adolfson of Lahainaluna High School. Kelly is currently attending Columbia University in New York City, where she is studying Political Science. Stephen and Chelsea are studying engineering at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.

These three young scholars embody our hopes for the future, and prove that Maui County will be left in capable hands.

This year, I plan to award three more $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors who have one thing in common: They intend to return to Maui County with a college diploma in hand in order to contribute to their community and the local economy. This is a requirement, because I believe there are many opportunities here at home, and these bright young minds can really make a difference for the future of Maui County.

To be eligible for the 2012 Josh Jerman Maui Nui Scholarship, applicants must be a resident of Maui County, be enrolled in a full-time program at an accredited four-year college or university (for the 2012-13 academic year) and demonstrate financial need. The application deadline is Monday, Feb. 20, and recipients of the award will be notified on or before March 30.

Scholarship funds will be awarded to recipients' respective schools in mid-August. Students can download application materials at and or inquire with their school counselor. I encourage all high school seniors to apply. If you'd like to learn more about my scholarship program, visit
