Boy Scouts Make Christmas Tree Recycling Easy and Convenient

December 28, 2012
Maui Weekly

The Troop 22 Boy Scouts in Kihei will recycle Christmas Trees on Saturday, Jan. 5.

Over 100,000 evergreen trees are imported to Hawai'i every year for Christmas. The Boy Scouts are encouraging all Maui residents to take advantage of the scouts' curbside Christmas tree collection service and recycle their trees this year rather than taking them to the landfill.

This program is a convenient way to recycle Christmas trees and support the troop as well. All proceeds benefit Troop 22.

Curbside pickup will be available for a suggested donation of $10 per tree. Make a reservation for pickup by Friday, Jan. 4, by calling 874-8450. Leave your name, phone number and address or email

Trees must be free of decorations, including tinsel, lights, ornaments, wire and flocking, before they can be recycled.

Or, for only a $5 donation, Christmas trees can be dropped off at the scouts' recycling site across the street from Long's in Kihei on the corner of Pi'ikea Avenue and South Kihei Road.

The scouts are doing their part to protect Maui's landfill and the environment by setting up a tree recycling center to chip the trees into fragrant wood chips or compost that can be used for landscaping and gardening.

Malafu Contractors we will chip trees onsite and bags of chipped evergreen will be available for purchase.
