Judge Richard T. Bissen Jr. administered the oath of office to Maui County Council members for the 2013-15 term before an audience of several hundred people on Wednesday morning, Jan. 2, in the Council Chambers located in the Kalana O Maui building in Wailuku.
County Clerk Jeffrey T. Kuwada presented each council member with their formal Certificate of Election in a ceremony that included greetings and introductions by Mistress of Ceremonies Deidre Tegarden, Gov. Neil Abercrombie's protocol officer, who welcomed entertainment by Ikaika Blackburn and Kamakoa Lindsey Asing and a special performance by Raiatea Helm, among other events.
The ceremony, which opened with the singing of the National Anthem by Maui Fire Department Battalion Chief Louis Romeo and firefighters Blackburn and Jerry "Pito" Javier, concluded with the singing of "Hawai'i Aloha" led by Helm.
Maui County Council Chair Gladys C. Baisa met with friends in her new office before going to the Council Chambers to be sworn in for the 2013-15 term of office.

Following the morning inauguration ceremonies, the council met at 2 p.m. for an organizational meeting that saw Councilmember Gladys C. Baisa unanimously elected as council chair and Bob Carroll as vice-chair.
