This week may have been the time to move from that house made out of straw--and into one made out of brick--as Maui experienced winds of 25-30 mph with gusts of up to 50 mph. A construction fence on Pi'ilani Highway partially collapsed and 3,000 Kihei residents lost power when tree branches fell on power lines.
The winds effects were also felt on the Westside, Molokai and on Lana'i. There were reports of visitors being rescued by Ocean Safety officers when they were pushed off shore while stand-up paddling off of Papalaua Beach, a roof was blown off on Molokai and the Hosmer Grove Trail on Haleakala was closed for the public's safety. The National Weather Service maintained a high surf advisory for east facing shores of Maui and Molokai and beach goers were warned to be aware of strong breaking waves and rip currents.
