On the evening of Thursday, March 7, at about 9 p.m., Wailea, Kihei, Wailuku and Kahului fire units were dispatched to a structure fire at 2737 South Kihei Road. Units arrived at the Hale Kama'ole Condominiums to find a third-story unit fully engulfed. The unit was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Fire companies from Lahaina and Makawao also assisted in this incident.
Forty units surrounding the involved structure were evacuated. The residents were allowed to return to their units at 2:45 a.m. The involved unit along with eight other surrounding units were not allowed to be reoccupied. Those displaced residents were housed in other units within the complex.
The unit was totally destroyed. The fire extended to the unit on the makai side, with this condominium sustaining damage to its roof and storage closet on the balcony. Other units surrounding the burned unit sustained smoke and water damage.
Although an investigation into the incident was not complete at press time, the fire does not seem to have been started intentionally.
