The Ha'iku Ho'olaule'a & Flower Festival, a daylong community celebration and fundraising event for Ha'iku Elementary School, is back for its 20th consecutive year. With an average attendance of over 7,000, festivities will be held at the Ha'iku Community Center & Grounds on Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

The event is free, and parking is available across the street from the community center for $2.

The Ha'iku Ho'olaule'a & Flower Festival is the main fundraising event for Ha'iku Elementary School, with the help and support of the Ha'iku Boys and Girls Club and Ha'iku Community Association. Money raised goes toward programs for local youth education, enrichment and activities.

Maui residents and visitors alike are invited to spend the day, bring their families, relax in lawn chairs and join the Ha'iku community to enjoy fabulous live entertainment, culinary delights from local restaurants and the Ha'iku PTA, the famous bake sale, one of the largest silent auctions on Maui, floral design and lei-making contests, a Ha'iku historical display, plenty of activities for keiki and much more. This year's "Keiki Zone," a popular feature of the event, is sponsored by Alexander & Baldwin.

This year's entertainment includes such celebrated performers as Ekolu, Makana, Eric Gilliom, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Ahumanu and Lei'ohu Ryder, to name a few.

"What makes the Ha'iku Ho'olaule'a different from other school-related festivals on Maui is the involvement of our community in the process," said Jennifer Oberg, Ha'iku School Parent-Community networking coordinator. "Ha'iku is a small, close-knit town that really cares about its school. Community members who have never even had children at the school come out to support us every year! We are truly grateful for that support, because we are not like a private school with a full-blown development department. We love having our community help us."

In addition to the annual ho'olaule'a, on Sunday, April 21, the Ha'iku Living Legacy project will host the "Ha'iku Homecoming Lu'au," an opportunity for community members to enjoy a traditional lu'au lunch, connect, talk story, enjoy the award-winning musical talents of falsetto and slack key master Richard Ho'opi'i, and participate in a historical Ha'iku display.

The lu'au event, also to be held at the Ha'iku Community Center & Grounds, will run from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $25, available through the Ha'iku Ho'olaule'a Website at and at the Ha'iku School Office. Residents can also mail in their payment to Ha'iku School PTA, 105 Pauwela Road, Ha'iku, HI, 96708.

To wind up the festivities, the brand new Ha'iku Elementary School Foundation (HESF) will host an evening party to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Ha'iku Ho'olaule'a. "Star Light Star Bright" is scheduled for Saturday, May 4, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Maui Country Club.

The "soiree" officially launches the HESF, a private foundation created to support the public education effort--the first elementary school foundation of its kind on Maui. All donations received at the event will benefit the foundation's projects, which focus primarily on capital improvements at the school. Providing a dazzling opportunity for Ha'iku supporters to come together to improve public education for Maui's keiki, the event is $100 a ticket and features live music from the Lily Meola Band.

Tickets for the Ha'iku Homecoming Lu'au and Star Light Star Bright are available at the Ha'iku Ho'olaule'a Website and in person at Ha'iku School.
