You don't need a green thumb to appreciate the intrinsic appeal of a garden. Need proof? Just pay a visit to the newly restored Enchanting Floral Gardens of Kula.
Nestled on the slopes of Haleakala at an elevation of 2,500 feet, the stunningly beautiful garden is one of Maui's cultural and educational jewels.
Home to more than 1,500 imported tropical and semi-tropical botanical species, the eight-acre property includes rare proteas, bromeliads, orchids, hibiscus, jade vines and other varieties that cannot be found anywhere else on the island.
Discover an enchanting paradise in Upcountry Maui. Enchanting Floral Gardens is home to more than 1,500 imported tropical and semi-tropical botanical species, including rare bromeliads, hibiscus, jade vines and other varieties that cannot be found anywhere else on the island.
Simply put, Enchanting Floral Gardens is a living exhibit of exotic plants and flowers.
Developed by prominent Japanese Botanist Kazuo Takeda, Enchanting Floral Gardens serves as living proof that nearly every kind of plant can thrive in the cool climate of Upcountry Maui.
Since acquiring it in 2012, three partners restored the property, preserving its distinctive spirit.
"The garden was created with a beautiful vision and a passion for rare and exotic plants," said partner Josef Erlemann. "We have put in an enormous amount of work to restore it to that vision and showcase the beauty of this botanical paradise."
Horticulturalists and sightseers alike could easily spend an entire day exploring the contours and admiring the tropical splendor of this enchanting property.
And the property is much more than a roadside attraction, as the gardens will soon serve as inspiration for artists, as well as a "botanical laboratory" for students.
"We are designing an educational outreach program for Maui County schools," said partner Richard Pechner, "and we are also developing artists-in-residence seminars."
Pechner has met a number of residents who were married at Enchanting Floral Gardens within the last 20 years.
"That really comes as no surprise," Pechner said. "The spectacular scenic beauty of our 'Stairway to Heaven' makes it an ideal spot for intimate weddings."
According to Pechner and Erlemann, the existing gift shop and caf has been stocked with locally made products and keepsakes, and will serve coffee, pastries and box lunches.
"Enchanting Floral Gardens will be a place for visitors and residents alike," said Erlemann. "We are strongly committed to the idea of community and believe that the caf and walkways will be a tranquil gathering space for friends and neighbors."
Discover this thriving Upcountry plant paradise at the grand reopening of Enchanting Floral Gardens this weekend.
"The garden will be open to the public free of charge on Sunday," said Erlemann, "as we open the gates to celebrate and honor the hard work that has been put in to make it so beautiful."
Enchanting Floral Gardens, located at 2505 Kula Highway (across from Mile Marker 10 on Highway 37), is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Maui residents and visitors are invited to celebrate the reopening of the newly restored Enchanting Floral Gardens at an open house event on Sunday, May 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
