Again this year, the Hawai'i Publishers Association (HPA) has presented the Maui Weekly with a Pa'i Award. We received a third place honorable mention in the Non-Daily Newspaper Excellence category just behind Pacific Business News (first place) and MidWeek (second).
This is our seventh award from the association. The Mainland judges of HPA, a nonprofit media organization that promotes the print publishing industry in Hawai'i, have said many nice things about us over the years.
The judges have described the Maui Weekly as a tabloid that's "clearly focused on offering a broad range of content to readers, from government to entertainment; from fashion to sports." The publication has good design, they said, and "almost all locally produced content."
From the Editor's Desk
"Maui Weekly continues to do an outstanding job of bringing the news of the island in a community newspaper fashion," HPA said. "The publication is written in a way that it appeals to locals as well as tourists, including local news, things to do and advertising that serves the needs of locals and travelers."
The judges have also appreciated our people-focused stories, which "mix soft and straight news stories to feed a variety of reader interests, including arts and lifestyle pieces."
The Maui Weekly is "an eclectic tabloid that does a nice job of reaching out in every direction to its Maui readers," said HPA judges. "Snappy design, nice use of color. A fun community weekly that's thorough and user-friendly."
The Maui Weekly is "a publication that Maui residents no doubt cannot do without."
This year, they noted our new design and once again complemented our content.
I would like to thank the intrepid staff, columnists, freelance writers and photographers, who, in sickness and in health, through rain, floods, fire, earthquakes, tsunamis, power outages and perfect surfing conditions, contribute to the production of this publication each and every week.
We are pleased that the publishing association has again recognized our positive contributions to the community. But, of course, we owe our success to our readers and stalwart advertisers. It's not really all about us and neither is it all about the opinion of the HPA judges. What we value more are your comments, input, opinions, press releases, news tips, advertising dollars and continuing support.
Please let us know how we can continue to improve the Maui Weekly and what we can do to help make Maui even better.
