August 8, 2013
Maui Weekly

The Lanakila Club Inc., a program for adults living with mental illness, was the beneficiary of this year's Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Friends Project and Award.

The community service project, which includes a grant of $10,000 to further the nonprofit's mission, was spearheaded by Rotary Club of Kahului Foundation Chair Judd Cunningham, with participation by members of several other Rotary clubs on Maui.

This award is a collaborative community service activity that involved more than 25 Rotarians, 100 community-service hours, and the support of the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation and the Lanakila Club.

Maui Rotarians, and friends and members of the Lanakila Club, a private, nonprofit organization, participated in a market makeover at the Central Maui Lanakila Clubhouse on Saturday, July 27, by prepping the facility for painting, installing shelves and conducting minor maintenance work.

When completed, the makeover will transform a section of the Lanakila Clubhouse by creating a marketplace for the sale of aquaponic produce and handmade goods created by the members. The cafe "facelift" will create training and employment services, and opportunities for the clubhouse members.

Presentation of the grant award from the Harry & Jeanette Weinburg Foundation took place at the Maui Tropical Plantation during a special luncheon on Monday, July 29.
