Galaway says he’s mentally fit for trial; case to proceed

August 15, 2013
Maui Weekly

The Maui News - After agreeing last week that he is mentally fit to proceed in his court case, a California man is set to be sentenced Oct. 10 for the killing of his girlfriend, Celestial Dove Cassman, at Nakalele Point on Sept. 1, 2011. An autopsy showed that she had been strangled to death.

Gerald Galaway Jr., 40, also agreed not to pursue his motion to withdraw his no-contest pleas to a reduced charge of manslaughter and kidnapping.

Galaway's sentencing has been on hold for the past year, since he asked to withdraw his no-contest pleas in a motion filed Aug. 1, 2012. Testifying in court, he said he felt pressured and was confused and "in a bit of a trance" when he entered the pleas last year.

Galaway is being held without bail at the Maui Community Correctional Center.
