Decent housing is a matter of conscience and action.

Habitat for Humanity Maui will present its seventh annual Build-a-thon on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13 and 14, to promote awareness and help eliminate substandard housing and homelessness in Hawai'i.

Decent housing is a matter of conscience and action. During this statewide event, community members like you, from all walks of life, will build homes, refurbish houses in need of repair, and raise awareness about the critical need for affordable housing for low-income families.

Throughout the Build-a-thon weekend, local offices will hold a variety of activities, ranging from active build sites and neighborhood revitalization efforts to charity walks.

On Maui, over 200 volunteers will work over the weekend to help a deserving family in Kahului. This family is comprised of a disabled individual, who is returning to Maui to care for her mother, who has Alzheimer's disease.

The house they own has a leaky roof that has caused the ceiling to collapse in several places. In addition, the home's damaged flooring needs repair for wheelchair or walker use. The bathroom needs be made handicap-accessible by taking out the bathtub, replacing it with a shower and adding grab bars.

"We want to fix the roof, repair the ceilings, put laminate flooring throughout the house, change out some windows and then paint the whole house," said Sherri K. Dodson, Habitat for Humanity Maui executive director.

"This is a great project and we are looking for teams or individuals to be a part of it," said Dodson. "Each worker will receive a 'goody' bag filled with great stuff, including discount coupons for the Habitat ReStore. Each volunteer will get a Habitat T-shirt, cap, and of course, a delicious lunch."

Each volunteer is asked to raise at least $100 to participate in the Build-a-thon.

The event will generate funds for Habitat for Humanity's local and statewide work. But most importantly, the Build-a-thon will support Hawai'i Habitat's vision that all people in Hawai'i have housing in which they can thrive.

"The Build-a-thon is usually a special day of work, but this year will be even better, because you can begin the project and be there to see it completed," said Dodson. "But if you can't join us for this year's Build-a-thon, we can use your help any day of the week."
