ing in the holiday season and make spirits bright by treating yourself and your loved ones to a holiday concert at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (The MACC). There are so many to choose from over the next two weeks--you may just want to attend more than one!
Right away this weekend, you have a chance to sing hallelujah! The Maui Choral Arts Association presents "Sing Noel" on Saturday, Nov. 30, in the McCoy Studio Theater at 7:30 p.m. Artistic Director Gary Shin-Leavitt welcomes you to kick off the first big holiday weekend with a joyful, fun concert for all ages, complete with Christmas carol sing-along and the "Hallelujah" chorus!" This concert will also feature beautiful arrangements of songs spanning the globe--from Gjello's "Serenity" to Peter, Paul & Mary's "Children Go Where I Send Thee" and hits from the film, "The Polar Express."
Tickets are $25 for adults, and just $10 for kids under 18 and students with proper identification.
The “Harps & Horns,” concert of favorite holiday music will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 1, at The MACC.
The next day, another blend of joyous sound will prevail in the Castle Theater--"Harps & Horns," a concert of favorite holiday music on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 3 p.m. The Festival of Harps will return to strum in the season, along with instrumentals by the Maui Community Band and the beautiful vocals of Maui Madrigale--a delightful combination of sound with harps, horns and voices! The band will perform original pieces composed especially for them, as well as commissioned arrangements of Hawaiian music.
Tickets are $8, $15 and $25. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the Maui Community Band's student scholarship fund.
It wouldn't be a complete musical celebration of the season on Maui without the annual Maui Pops Orchestra's Holiday Concert! This year, "Holiday Pops: Peace On Earth" will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. in the Castle Theater. The Maui Pops Orchestra again brings special guest pianist Hyperion Knight, who will perform Grieg's First Piano Concerto. This Romantic Era classic is one of the most popular piano concertos ever composed!)
In addition, Na Leo Lani O Maui, Maui's Hawaiian Community Choir, under the direction of Gale Wisehart and Kumu Hula Uluwehi Guerrero, will join in for the program of holiday favorites. Tickets for his holiday extravaganza are $15, $30, $40, $50, and half-price for anyone 18 and under.
Maui Pops Orchestra also has two other concerts on the books in January and March, so take advantage of their special deal: Patrons who purchase tickets to all three concerts in the Maui Pops Series (Dec. 8, and Jan 19 and 23, 2014) will receive a 10 percent discount off each ticket price.
And then (hardly last and hardly least), The MACC will present Willie K and his band in the ever-popular holiday concert, Hawaiian-style, with "Willie Kalikimaka," on Saturday, Dec. 14, in the Castle Theater at 7:30 p.m.
Maui's own Willie K is one of the most versatile performers one can ever hope to experience. He is a virtuoso on guitar and 'ukulele, a prolific songwriter, and an amazingly gifted vocalist who can cover every musical genre--from island sounds to world music, rock'n'roll, blues, opera, musical theater--and excel at it all! You can expect the unexpected when Willie K is on stage, so this will be an exceptionally thrilling evening of celebratory music.
Tickets are $12, $28, $35 and $45. This presentation is one of The MACC's signature Ho'onanea Series events, so there will be extra-special pre-show festivities that include live music, Hawaiian arts and crafts, lei stands and ono-licious island food.
