The Maui News - In light of a legal challenge to Kaua'i County's pesticide and genetically modified organisms regulation ordinance, revisions will be made to a similar bill awaiting hearing before a Maui County Council committee, a council member said last week.
Councilmember Elle Cochran introduced a bill modeled after Kaua'i's measure, and she said that she would introduce amendments when the bill is discussed in the Policy and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee. She was working on those amendments last week.
The bill will get its first hearing before Maui council members on Jan. 28, committee Chairman Riki Hokama said. He said that he was aware of the legal challenge of the biotech companies against the Maui bill and would be monitoring the matter as it goes through the judicial process. He added that his committee would keep track of GMO-related bills being considered by state lawmakers and see how that could affect the Maui bill. But first, he said, he would let Maui County residents have their say on Cochran's proposed bill before the council.
