A heavy key chain can wear out the tumblers inside the ignition, leading to ignition switch failure. Use a lightweight key chain with a separation feature and drive with the ignition key only. If your key "sticks" when you try to turn on your car, it's a warning sign. Resist getting a new key made for an older vehicle, as the sharper edges will likely destroy an aging ignition switch. Replace the switch before you get stranded!
