Local Artist a Hit on World Tour & Maui: Held Over Through May 20

April 24, 2014
Maui Weekly

Longtime West Maui resident Hamish Burgess just returned from a blowout U.S. tour with The Irish Rovers, signing hundreds of his "The Life of the Rover," a commissioned poster for the iconic band's 50th anniversary. The image also graces the cover of the group's latest triple CD, "The Irish Rovers, 50 Years."

While the band has been selling out concert halls across the U.S., Burgess's Celtic artwork for the Rovers has appeared on magazine covers and national television networks. The "The Life of the Rover" painting, however, has never been displayed on Maui until now.

Its first exhibit on Maui is the centerpiece of "The Celtic art of Hamish Burgess," showing through April from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Hawaiian Village Coffee Shop in the Kahana Gateway Center, seven miles north of Lahaina.

“The Life of the Rover,” a commissioned poster and cover for The Irish Rovers’ 50th anniversary CD, is on exhibit in the Kahana Gateway Center.

"I'm well known as a local bagpiper on the West Side, but not many folks know I work fulltime as a Celtic artist for a living," said Burgess. "This is definitely my most ambitions piece. I wanted to do it in the style of the 'Book of Kells' to honor the band's heritage, but combined with a modern twist--Celtic art pun intended--to tell The Irish Rovers' story from the lads' origins in Ireland, through emigrating and forming the band in Canada, and up to the present day."

Within the piece are 26 historical references to the group, and 12 songs they recorded that were significant in their career.

Rovers' founder George Millar discovered Burgess' work on his Website and called him in Kahana to ask if he would consider working on an album cover. Since then, Burgess has completed a considerable amount of work for these Celtic music icons and has received international praise for The Irish Rovers' television special backdrops, book covers, and DVD and CDs covers he created for the legendary band.

Original paintings, giclee and art prints are available for purchase. The artist lives around the corner, and is available to "pop in for a chat" about his art. Call (808) 264-5190 to meet him at the coffee shop. Preview his artwork at
