15-and-Under Basketball League Begins

May 15, 2014
Maui Weekly

Monday, May 5, was the start of South Maui's 15-and-Under Basketball League. This year, there are 10 teams.

The Flames got the action going with a 49-33 win over 808 Elite. This is the same 808 team that won the Midgets (11 and 12 years old) Division just a few weeks ago playing against the Flames team they had defeated. However, this Flames team added several older players. Efron Villon's game-high 12 points led the Flames, with Logan Nakamura adding seven. 808 Elite was led by Asa Tua's six points.

Tristan Nichols scored a game-high 24 points as the Kihei Boyz rolled over Maui Lani 47-21. Darren Yadao added 12 points. Maui Lani was led by Chayce Akaka-Foster's 10 points.

Cameron Hanisch's 14 points led the Upcountry Kings past Southside's Finest, 33-27. L.J. Lindsey paced Southside with 15 points.

On Wednesday, May 7, trailing by two points in the final seconds, 'Iao Boys took advantage of a costly Team Standard turnover to tie the game and send it into overtime, then pull out a 36-35 win. Warren Feike topped 'Iao with 12 points. Keo Chun had a game-high 13 points for Team Standard.

Finishing the week's play, brothers Mark, Bronson and Bryson Ranchez combined to score 24 points in Elite's 36-22 win over Na Koa Ikaika. Makana Reis-Schranz led Na Koa with seven points.

15-and-Under games are played Monday and Wednesday nights at Kalama Park. Monday's first game starts at 5:30 p.m.; Wednesday's begin at 6 p.m.

Don't forget South Maui's Third Annual Southside Skate Jam on Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Kalama Skatepark. It's for skateboarders ages 10 and under of all skill levels.

One Love Skate will once again lead everybody through some fun and challenging drills and games. Great prizes to be given away, including new skateboards from Aloha Boards.
