Although she sounds like an incarnate of a legendary jazz songstress from the New York Cotton Club days, Kelly Covington is quite at home in a tropical rainforest. She performs at spas and five-star resort lounges, singing jazz, funk, R&B and pop with Maui's top convention bands, or in revelry with her Maui musical 'ohana.
Kelly and guitarist Ron Mettoyer were two of the many organizers and musicians who recently gave their time and talent to a stellar event celebrating Bobby Ingram's life at Maui Tropical Plantation. The Maui musical community and Bobby's family shared their memories and paid musical tribute to the bluesman, who left us on May 29. He will be deeply missed.
Kelly is accompanied by the best of Maui musicians, including Lenny Castellanos, Brian Cuomo, and her band Funky Business, with bassist Jay Molina, percussionist Mike Kennedy and guitarist Alan Villaren.
This week, Kelly is off to Hawai'i Island for a corporate gig with Expresso--guitarist Tim O'Hara's band--including vocalists Margie Heart, Missy Aguilar and Maui musical theater luminary Charles Cook, pianist Jerry Kovalsky and Danny M on bass.
Kelly has her own label--Johnny Jazz Records--and released her own debut CD, "Quiet Mind and Body." She arranges and records all the back-up vocals for Marty Dread. She recorded her newest CD, "Jazz at the Spa," with her brother-in-law, Grammy-winning producer, songwriter, musician and performer Narada Michael Walden. Narada has scores of No. 1 hits.
At Narada's state-of-the-art Tarpan Recording Studio in the Bay area, one of Kelly's vocal student's, Cheyenne Elliott, is recording a duet with her grandmother, Dionne Warwick. Kelly sings backs up on their song, "Let There Be Love."
Kelly sings regularly with jazz pianist, singer and producer Fulton Tashombe on Sundays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Japengo at the Hyatt Regency in Ka'anapali. You can hear her singing and playing flute and percussion with singer, guitarist and percussionist Margie Heart as "Soul and Heart" on Friday, June 20, at the Ritz Lobby Lounge in Kapalua, and at the Four Seasons on July 19 and 26.
Find Kelly's music at the Kelly Covington Official Website, www.pampetersen.com/kelly, which was designed by another superb Maui singer/musician, Pam Petersen.
Maui's Swing Queen, jazz vocalist and pianist Louise Lambert, and her band perform at Three's Bar & Grill on Friday nights and at Kono's in Kihei on Wednesdays. She teaches voice, piano and "How to Sing and Play in a Band Workshops" for all ages. She also provides world-class musical entertainment for special events. Contact her at www.louiselambert.com, email@example.com or (808) 205-3971.
