Margie Heart

Time to fly!

June 30, 2014
Louise Lambert - Contributing Writer (louiselambert1@gmail.com) , Maui Weekly

Whether entertaining at five-star resorts, teaching school music programs or leading drum circles, Margie Heart is flying high. She is an accomplished vocalist, guitarist, percussionist, mandolin player and educator.

Margie, originally from New Jersey, was raised in a musical family. Her dad played Italian folk songs on a Hammond organ and her mom sang in choirs. After raising three sons and supporting them by playing and teaching music, her youngest is off to college. It's now Margie's time to soar from an empty nest.

Margie plays contemporary, smooth jazz, Hawaiian and original music. She performs Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys and Sade songs, to name a few.

One of Hawai'i's top convention acts, Espresso, features Margie and Kelly Covington, who also have a soulful duo, rightfully called "Soul and Heart."

Last week, Margie performed in a contemporary duo with pop vocalist Joy Fields, a great voice technique instructor. Margie's delightful vocals and guitar playing accompanied Joy beautifully, as they alternated singing lead and sweet, refreshing harmonies.

Margie's guitar work has a joyful rhythm, enhanced by her percussion experience. She loves beautiful melodies and Afro-Cuban percussion. Her favorite music to play is the Brazilian guitar sounds of Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Margie began teaching dance in 1989, with the Maui Dance Council. As an instructor for the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, she teaches rhythm programs in schools and professional development workshops for teachers.

A highly skilled conga player, Margie is a member of the Zeeland Drummers, with salsa teacher Zephyr, Windcloud and percussionist/violinist Andrea Walls. She is a drum circle facilitator with Arthur Hull's Village Music Circles, and is featured on his book cover and in his instructional video. She leads team building and recreational drum circles for corporations like Nike and the NFL, and facilitated The Lobby Group with Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead.

Through rhythm, music and her songwriting, Margie brings positive messages to uplift her students and audiences.

Focusing on developing and releasing her original music, she records at Tommy Hall's studio, Melody Line Productions.

Hear Margie solo at Japengo at the Hyatt on Mondays, with Soul and Heart at the Ritz on July 11 and 18, at the Four Seasons on July 12 with Joy Fields, and on July 19 and 26 with Kelly.
