Vote Yes for the GMO Moratorium

August 11, 2014
David Doyle - Ha‘iku , Maui Weekly

The world is such an amazing place! People growing food that I can see, buy, touch, feel, eat! The food is alive and fresh. The farmers are meeting regularly at Maui Farmers Union United meetings every month. They share their creations with friendship, stewardship and community at the Upcountry Farmers Market each Saturday. Their produce is organic and mechanically cultivated without needless harmful pesticides. It is grown with nature, not in a battle against it, and with love.

The new farmers of today are really a reincarnation of traditional farming, using the techniques and technology of today to render needless the corporate-based, chemical-based, process-based, livestock-based, hell-bent-for-profits-based, agribusiness model represented by Monsanto, Syngenta, Mycogen, etc.

Local farmers are able to match yields and productivity without the harmful externalities of corporate farming methods. At the same time, their methods are sustainable, health-based, and not exploitative of our soil, groundwater, resources, or the health of our children. Nor do they hijack the simple nurturing act of saving seeds for the benefit of future generations.

A new day has dawned in farming. Say no to the corporate-based agribusiness model that delivers processed foods and an animal-based diet, contributing to our national health care crisis. Vote for our children, and their children's children. Vote yes for the GMO moratorium in November. Be a part of the movement. Be a part of the future of farming--not its past with no real farms and no real food.

How amazing the real world is!
