A quick glance at the proposed megalopolis in central Maui ("Kahu-Luku") shows the sprawl that is mandated by our current auto-centric zoning laws. From the dulling sameness of the business park by the airport to the big boxes at Maui Lani, the only place where people can live is in the garage-scape subdivisions between them.
Kihei will face the same challenge as we develop the lands mauka of the Pi'ilani Highway--Kihei Mauka. We have a challenge and an opportunity to create a citizen-based plan for a walkable neighborhood anchored by the police station at the south end to the new high school at the north end.
A&B must take part, as they are the gateway project. Folks are encouraged to contact A&B or the Kihei Community Association to support planning for our "Up-Town" Kihei.
